Taragarh Palace Hotel in Kangra is an extension to the summer palace of the Nawab of Bhawalpur which later was converted into a luxury hotel. The original palace was an eclectic mix of materials and styles built over many years.
The new building preserves the scale and rhythm of the original while carrying forward the local tradition of brick masonry. The use of timber trusses in the vernacular buildings of the region is no longer sustainable due to extensive deforestation and the unavailability of structural timber. Steel trusses were used as an alternative to timber.
The new building connects to the old palace through a bridge while skirting a camphor grove on the site. The flowing corridors allow the scent of camphor to waft through the building and a variety of semi-covered functions are arranged along the corridors.
