This project houses a training institute for fresh recruits to gain mid-level management positions in the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, at Pune. The site is located on the Bombay-Pune highway and slopes from the highway down to fields against a backdrop of hills.
The roofscape of the building modulates its relationship to the site. Facing the highway, the roof creates a barrier by sloping down from the upper floor to ground level while also echoing the silhouette of the hills beyond.
The spaces in the building unfold along a series of three courtyards around which the academic, dining and hostel functions are respectively structured. The courtyards form a theatre for elements of surprise created through light and shadow, slopes, and the framing of views.
The sloping tiled roofs and the Deccan trap stone masonry integrate the building with the traditional urban vocabulary of Pune.
